BIO

I am a 39 year old composer, producer and multi instrumentalist living in Perth, Western Australia.  My styles range from hybrid symphonic/electronic soundtrack productions to full orchestral scores, chamber music, solo instrumental works, folk, electronic music and experimental / industrial sound design. I have experience with sound installations, spatial music (surround sound in 5.1 or greater), software integration, electro acoustic instruments, and the design and construction of electronic instruments and effects.

My journey in music began with a violin that I discovered at a fair for $5, which turned out to be over a hundred years old. By the age of nine I was studying the violin under Joanna Dramatis, then later John Ford, principal second violin player of the West Australian Symphony Orchestra.

My earliest compositions were written on a Commodore 64 at the age of 11 or 12, and throughout high school I continued writing music using PC based tracker software. I began performing professionally at the age of 15, and relocated to the South West of WA at the age of 18, where I taught myself piano and continued composing.

In 2003, at the age of 23, I was commissioned by the state government to compose, record and produce a 40 minute composition - a new orchestral and electronic suite that is now housed in the state library. Since then, I have performed across Australia, Europe, and Asia; and I have played live on ABC radio.

I have a particular interest in film composition, and films that I have scored have been screened internationally. My approach to film scoring centres around the emotional response of the viewer, taking cues from character development, environmental cues, and an overarching commitment to collaborating with the film makers in order to produce a cohesive and compelling work of art that complements and enhances their vision. I am particularly passionate about the re-creation of realistic sounding orchestral and choral music using digital sample libraries and synthesis, and the integration of electronic elements to enhance the sonic possibilities of orchestral recordings.

I am currently studying a degree in Music (Composition and Music Technology) at The West Australian Academy of Performing Arts. Under the direction of Lee Buddle (Crank Studios), I have furthered my skills in recording, mixing, and mastering, and have access to the recording and production facilities at WAAPA, and a large pool of high level musicians who record and collaborate with me.

Aside from my studies, I work in the live music industry and in the last couple of years I have worked as a synthesiser technician for The West Australian Symphony Orchestra and Taylor Swift, and in lighting and stage work for U2, Queen and Ryan Adams.

My home studio encompasses a large collection of film-ready sample libraries, analog and digital synthesisers, many digital effects, and professional grade studio monitoring. I am competent with film editing and have the facilities and software at home to sync music to film.

I play violin (electric / acoustic), viola, guitar (electric / acoustic), piano, synthesisers, the theremin, Irish low whistle, the bodhrán and Irish bouzouki.
